Staying Grounded to Rise Up!

It's hard to deny that the mixture of fresh air, sunshine, and the sounds of nature are healing for the mind, body and soul. That’s why my family and I make sure to spend a lot of time outdoors! In fact, because we spend a lot of time outdoors, I’ve introduced my 2 year old toddler to the practice of grounding/earthing (she even takes initiative to do it on her own now).

Haven’t heard of earthing? You may be earthing and may not even know it! Those long walks on the beach, the sand between your toes? Yup, that counts as earthing!

Make note, earthing is nothing new, but rather, the rediscovery of an ancient practice used as the easiest and most primal way to help optimize human health.

Earthing

Earthing is unobstructed contact with the Earth’s floor, such as walking barefoot in sand, on a dirt trail, in a grassy meadow, etc. Our bodies and the Earth are natural conductors of electricity. When we connect to the earth with our bare feet, we receive a transfer of negatively charged electrons from the Earth into our bodies to neutralize the positively charged electrons (destructive free radicals contributing to inflammation) housed within our bodies. This exchange of energy from the earth to our bodies can restore and ignite self-healing mechanisms from within.

How can earthing improve your health?

Earthing has the ability to improve many aspects of one’s health. For example, as you may know, inflammation is the pathway to many chronic ailments. Among these ailments are: cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune conditions, and neurodegenerative disorders. According to many studies, earthing has shown to help improve pain and other physiological processes associated with inflammation by the transfer of the negatively charged electrons from the earth to neutralize the positively charged electrons in our bodies. Earthing has also shown to improve the body’s circadian rhythm by helping to lower cortisol levels and increase melatonin, which helps to regulate sleep (if you’ve ever been camping, then you can definitely relate!).

How to begin earthing?

It’s very important to find a surface such as grass, sand or dirt. It’s super easy! Earthing can be as simple as stepping outside of your home and kicking off your shoes to walk around on the grass for 20 minutes, or taking the family out to the beach or a hiking trail, and roaming around barefoot for awhile.

Also, don’t forget to close your eyes, breathe deeply and take in the sounds of nature while receiving those negatively charged electrons from the earth. It’s really that simple!

However, if you don’t have easy access to the great outdoors there are earthing products you can purchase to help you earth while you work, exercise, relax and sleep, such as earthing sheets and mats.
